What is the film about?

The story starts 15 years ago at St Mary’s Orphanage in Mangaluru. A stranger arrives with a group of children and convinces the Sister in charge to let them stay. But soon, tragedy strikes. Most of the children suddenly die of food poisoning. The Sister is arrested, and the case is buried.

Fast forward to the present in Bengaluru, a city shaken by a series of mysterious murders. A tough officer, Ajaz Malik (played by Aravind Kuplikar), is assigned to investigate these serial killings. At the same time, an emotionally broken investigative journalist, Vikram Acharya (played by Poornachandra Mysore), is struggling with his personal grief. His sister helps him recover and return to work, only for her to become one of the murder victims.

When Vikram begins investigation, he finds strange links between the recent murders and that orphanage tragedy 15 years ago. He meets Ananya (played by Sangeetha Rajeev), his sister’s friend, who has more to do with the case than it first appears. Soon, Vikram and Ajaz realize they are chasing the same truth and they decide to work together.

But can they solve the mystery? And will justice finally be served after all these years?

Direction, Writing, and Themes

Roshan D’Souza wears many hats in this film – as a director, writer, and editor. He is a former software engineer turned filmmaker. And this debut film shows his strong creative vision. He explores bold themes, like psychology, trauma, justice, and unexplained phenomena.

The title “Nimitta Matra” loosely means “just a medium.” And that’s what the movie explores, can people be just tools in a larger cosmic plan? Can science explain everything? Or is there something more?

The screenplay is clever and minimalistic. There’s no unnecessary drama. Every scene has a purpose. Every character matters. It’s a tight story that respects the audience’s intelligence.
